We Indian girls have a unique skin color.
And more than paying attention to the color of the skin, you need to pay attention to the undertone of your skin.
This means you should not only pay attention to whether you have
- Light skin
- Medium skin
- Dark skin
But you also need to pay attention to the undertone of your skin.
Once you understand what is your skin undertone, then you can pick a hair color that will suit your skin.
Let’s get started.

Let me explain how you can discover what your undertone is.
How do you find your skin undertone?
1. Look at your veins
Look at the inside of your wrist in natural sunlight (avoid artificial light) and see the color of your veins.
- If it looks greener: You have a warm undertone.
- If it looks blue or violet: You have a cool undertone.
- If it’s blue and green: You have a neutral undertone – this means almost all hair colors will suit your skin.
Mine is green, and my skin has a very yellow/olive or warm undertone.
However, my fiance has a pink or cool undertone since he’s half Scottish and Irish. You can clearly see the difference in the photo:
2. What metal suits you more?
Look at your face in the mirror (preferably with sunlight) and keep a pair of gold earrings next to your face.
Then repeat the same experiment with silver.
What jewelry complements your skin tone better?
If it’s gold, then you definitely have a warm undertone.
If it’s silver, then you have a cool undertone.
In my case, since I have a warm undertone, gold suits me better. Whereas for my fiance, silver suits his skin better.
3. See how you tan
If you notice that your skin burns and becomes red after staying out in the sun for long, chances are you have a cool undertone – more pinkish.
But if you’re like me and tan brown or olive after spending too much time in the sun, then you have a cool undertone.
These are the best exercises to determine your skin undertone.
Now, let’s look at some good hair colors based on your skin’s undertone.
If you have fair/light skin (Indian Girl)
If you have light skin and a warm undertone, then you can sport:
- Chestnut brown or warm golden brown
- Brown hair with golden or yellow tones
If you have light skin and a cool undertone (pink), then you can wear more reddish and warmer-toned brown hair:
- Brown hair with red highlights
- Mahogany hair
- Deeper purple and red-toned brown hair
If you have a neutral skin tone and fair-light skin, you can honestly pick any brown or mahogany-colored hair. Most colors will suit your skin tone.
Since you have fair skin, you can also go for blonde hair colors mixed with brown – or blonde highlights in dark brown. These variations will look really good.
If you have medium brown skin (Indian Girl)
Now if you have a medium brown skin tone, you can sport much darker brown hair colors.
You can also get blonde highlights or yellowish highlights if you have a warm undertone.
You can also color only the bottom portion of your hair if you don’t want to commit to a single color.
But if you have a cool undertone, get red or purple highlights.
Brown hair with different highlights looks really good on brown skin, especially for Indian girls.
You can also consider mahogany hair if you have medium brown or wheatish skin. Red hair suits almost everyone!
If you have dark brown skin (Indian Girl)
Now if you have dark skin, you can actually go bold and wear practically any bright color.
You can go blonde, you can go blue, or pink. These colors will really complement your skin tone.
For instance, here’s a dark-skinned woman with pink hair. Look how pretty that is!
If it’s too daring, then you can just get brown or blonde highlights done.
I hope this helps.
But if you haven’t ever colored your hair before and are thinking of coloring your hair, go to a hair colorist or a hair color specialist.
Go to someone with lots of experience and who has a lot of photos of their work. This will help you get a fair idea of what will look good with your skin tone.
Similarly, when you find people of your skin tone, save their hair color photos on Instagram so that you can show your hair colorist your ideas.
This is a good way to communicate with your hair colorist and then you can go forward with a hair color both of you agree will look good on you.
