how to hide colored hair for an interview

Although your hair color should have nothing to do with your professionalism and how you work, unfortunately not many corporates see it that way.

Colored hair is often interpreted as unkempt, unprofessional, rebellious, or radical.

And even if you have the skills to qualify for the job you want or seek, your hair color might get in the way and you may get turned down for the job.

If you want to maximize your chances of getting the job but at the same time don’t want to color your hair a natural color, then there are a few fixes you can try.

In this post, I want to discuss a few ways you can hide your colored hair for an interview.

5 Easy Ways to Temporarily Hide your Colored Hair for an Interview

1. Use a temporary hair wax

You can get a temporary hair wax like this on Amazon and it’s pretty easy to apply.

It’s temporary and it will come off so you can cover your hair color easily with this hair wax.

Here’s how you use it:

  1. Wash your hair thorougly
  2. Wear gloves (to protect your hands from the wax) and apply the wax to the colored parts of your hair.
  3. Scrunch the hair.
  4. Dry your hair using a blow dryer.
  5. Apply a little more wax to areas where the color isn’t dark enough.

Do not use a brush because you will brush the color off.

The only drawbacks to using this hair wax are it will leave your hair slightly stiff and scrunchy and the color might transfer if you get it wet because it is after all not permanent.

2. Use a temporary color hair spray

Here’s another coloring solution for you that’s temporary.

L’Oreal Paris has this beautiful temporary color hair spray that you can use to temporarily color your hair and hide your hair color.

It lasts for only 2-4 washes and completely comes off.

There is no bleach required and the color is safe.

3. Use a Hair Wand

This is a good option to consider if you only have colored streaks in your hair and you’re trying to cover the colored streaks.

In this case, you don’t need to dye your entire hair with semi-permanent dye or wax.

Just get one of these Hair Wands and you’re good to go.

You can just touch up the colored streaks in your hair by using this hair wand (it’s like a mascara applicator) on the colored areas.

The color doesn’t clump and can easily be washed in 1 shampoo wash.

However, please note that it’s not waterproof so avoid getting it wet after you’ve applied the color.

4. Find a good wig

Wear a wig

You can buy a wig in any store.

It is the perfect solution if you don’t want to get your hands messy with color and you just don’t have the time to color your hair with temporary color.

You can quickly purchase a wig on Amazon and put it on your colored hair to make sure that the colored parts of your hair are well-hidden. Just make sure you buy a wig in a natural hair color that’s also not too glossy so that it looks realistic.

If the wig doesn’t look too natural or is too long, then you can get it cut at a hair salon. Most hairdressers will be happy to do it for you.

Wearing wigs are tons of fun – at least that’s what Hannah Montana taught me.

5. Wear a head scarf

Wear a head scarf

Head scarves are classy and this is the last resort if you don’t want to apply any hair color or wear a wig.

Just tie one around your head and make sure that all your hair is neatly packed in a bun before you do it.

You can tie the headscarf behind your head at your neck or tie it upwards.

Here is a nice resource to help you learn how to tie a headscarf in multiple different ways. I’m sure you’ll find one that you like and suits you beautifully.

Do interviewers care about dyed hair?

Unfortunately, interviewers do care about dyed hair.

Interviewers take into account how people present themselves.

And most of the time, people with piercings and unnatural hair colors are at a serious disadvantage during interviews.

They’re not taken seriously for corporate or high-level jobs.

If you are considering applying for an interview in a white-collar job, then you will have to play by their rules.

You can find out about the rules in advance from HR, however, it goes without saying that these type of companies prefer their employees to blend in while not sporting anything too colorful or spunky.

You can use any of the methods I’ve highlighted above to help you hide your colored hair when going for the interview.

What hair colors are acceptable for work?

Any hair color that occurs naturally should be acceptable for work like:

  • Blonde
  • Brown
  • Black
  • Grey
  • Auburn

I highly recommend just checking with your company’s HR to find out about their policies.

Every company has different rules, so it’s worth checking before you make any decisions.

I hope this post helped you learn how you can hide colored hair. Best of luck for your interview!
