You never imagined that your freshly dyed turquoise hair would look so pretty.
But you know that eventually with time, it could fade or become greener or both.
Or worse, get lighter and not look as pigmented as before.
Because the yellow tones under the hair start to mix with the turquoise and blue+yellow=green.
If you like green, that’s okay.
But if you want to maintain that blue tone and keep the turquoise shade for longer, read further.
In this post, I’ll discuss how to maintain turquoise hair at home so that you can keep the color for longer.
Let’s begin.

1. Do not shampoo your hair in the first 3 days
For the first 72 hours after coloring your hair with a semi-permanent dye (direct dye), your hair cuticles will be open.
This means, if you shampoo your hair in that time, you will lose a lot of hair color because the color will leak from your hair strands.
So do not shampoo your hair for 72 hours, that will give your hair enough time for the cuticles to close and seal in most of the color.
2. Use a dry shampoo
Regular shampooing will fade the color more quickly.
If you want the maintain the turquoise hair color for longer, then only shampoo your hair 2 times a week maximum.
You can use a dry shampoo like this one for your hair.
This particular dry shampoo absorbs all the oil from your scalp and doesn’t leave a white residue in your hair and brushes out really easily. It has a pleasant smell and is honestly the best!
3. Use a sulfate-free shampoo
When shampooing your hair normally, you need to use a sulfate-free shampoo because shampoos with sulfates will strip your hair of its color and the turquoise will fade more quickly.
This is one of the best shampoos made specifically for color-treated hair.
It will make sure that it doesn’t strip your hair of color while cleaning your scalp and hair gently to remove excessive buildup.
It will leave your hair soft and smooth afterward.
It works well for straight, wavy, curly, and kinky hair.
4. Wash your hair only in cold or room-temperature water
I personally love hot showers but hot water is going to raise your hair cuticles which will let most of the color slip out.
A trick to this is to cover your hair with a plastic cap and shower normally in hot water.
After you’re done washing your body, change it to cold water and then wash your hair.
This way your hair color will remain turquoise for longer.
If you can’t manage cold water, shampoo your hair in warm water and quickly rinse it off with cold water to avoid the hair cuticles from opening.
5. Use a purple shampoo
Purple shampoos contain a purple pigment that cancels out the yellow tone of the hair.
So, if your hair is already showing green hues or you’re noticing that the turquoise is looking too teal, use purple shampoo on wet hair after your regular shampooing.
Gently massage the purple shampoo into your hair and leave it in for at least 3 minutes to let it do its work.
This particular purple shampoo by John Frieda is one of the best shampoos on the market. It is formulated by John Frieda himself and it not only cancels out the green tones but also enhances the turquoise shade.
You’ll find your hair more pigmented and colored after shampooing with this one. It removes all of the brassiness and it’s honestly better than most salon brands.
If you find that the shampoo is working beautifully for you and you want to get the whole experience, then buy the shampoo and the conditioner together.
6. Add a little turquoise dye to your deep conditioner
This is a cool hack to get the turquoise shade to last longer and keep your hair bright and pigmented always.
Add a tablespoon of semi-permanent hair dye to your deep conditioner in a bowl and condition your hair for a few minutes before rinsing it off.
This will help your hair color become more enhanced and the turquoise to stay on for longer.
7. Protect your hair when going out in the sun
Have you noticed how clothes or articles get lighter and fade color when kept in the sun for too long?
The same thing happens to your hair when you go out in the sun without protection.
If you have long hair, you can tie it in a bun and wear a head scarf like this to prevent the sun from hitting your hair and fading your color.
But if that’s not possible then just use a spray sunscreen for your hair like this – this can be sprayed on your hair and scalp and is perfect to make sure your hair doesn’t fade color quickly.
Problem solved.
8. Use a protectant spray before styling
It is advised to not blow dry or use styling tools when you have colored hair because the heat fades the color fast.
Heat opens up the hair cuticles allowing the color to escape much more quickly.
But if you have to blowdry or use any heating tools, use a heat-protectant spray like this to avoid the color from fading quickly.
This particular heat protectant is actually one of the most popular ones in the market – it prevents flat irons or blowdryers from drying out the hair and causing frizz and leaves your hair smooth and shiny.
9. Protect your hair from chlorine
If you like to swim, then you need to be careful.
Most swimming pools have chlorine in them and chlorine fades color fairly quickly.
To ensure that your hair is dry and water doesn’t seep into your hair, please wear a waterproof cap like this one.
This cap is specifically made for people who don’t want to get their hair wet – if you have long hair or dreadlocks or curly hair, it will definitely work for you.
Summing up
Turquoise hair is definitely more difficult to maintain than other colors because blue hair turns green fairly quickly if you’re not careful.
But if you use the methods mentioned above and are careful regarding heat, then you can maintain your turquoise hair for longer!
