I have 3A-3B curly hair and I’ve been using Cantu products for a few years – they’re a Godsend especially when I am in a hurry and I need to tame my curls.
I don’t even use gel – that’s how good the products are.
My friend who has poker straight hair always tells me my hair smells amazing and she was curious to try it.
I did my own research and I am excited to talk about it because I know many straight hair girls will actually want to know what exactly Cantu does for straight hair.
So, the question is can you use Cantu in straight hair?
Yes. But depending on what your hair texture is like and what results you are looking for, the product will give you different results. Let’s dive in.

Can you use Cantu in straight hair?
Yes, you aren’t going to damage your hair in any way and Cantu is a hair product so it can be applied to all hair types without any negative side effects or damage.
However, what results you get mainly depends upon your hair type.
Let me explain.
If you have extremely healthy straight hair (to which you don’t apply heat or chemicals), it means that your hair is already well-moisturized.
Cantu is specifically designed for curl definition – this means it helps curls clump together when it’s wet.
So, if you have well-moisturized hair and you use Cantu Activator on your hair while it’s wet, your hair is going to become slightly greasy and heavy.
Curly hair is mostly dry and very frizzy.
I am speaking from personal experience since I have very curly hair.
So, when my hair is wet, I apply Cantu Curl Activator (I put a little in my palm and dilute it with water to make it creamy) to my hair and then use the preying motion to distribute it evenly through my curls.
This helps my curls stick together (clumping) and I am able to get beautiful curl definition.
It doesn’t feel heavy on my curls because I have a lot of hair volume and I need it curbed down.
Just for reference, this is what my hair looks like without any product in it, brushed out:
And this is what my hair looks like with Cantu cream and no other product:
I’m the one with curly hair.
If I am going out, I use this water spritzer (it provides a uniform mist – great for curly hair) all throughout my hair and let the water make my hair extremely damp before taking the Cantu Curl Activator cream and generously applying it to my hair. I mix it with a little water before applying it because it absorbs better and becomes more liquid.
What happens if you use Cantu in straight hair?
If you already have straight hair where sebum is distributed evenly or your straight hair is healthy and moisturized, Cantu might not really provide you with any further benefits.
It may make your hair heavy and greasy and it will weigh down with all the extra cream.
However if you have straight hair that’s dry and damaged due to heat or chemicals like perm or color, then yes – Cantu is going to benefit your hair.
It will help your hair stay moisturized and glossy for a long period of time because it is mainly enriched with shea butter which provides good moisturizing benefits.
It will reduce frizz, and flyaways and help your hair become more healthy.
By increasing the moisture hold, your hair will be less prone to breakage and stay stronger.
I highly recommend following up with argan oil to help lock in the moisture that the Cantu Cream is providing.
This will really help your hair – curly or straight.
Now my friend’s hair is damaged because she uses a lot of heat so Cantu actually worked great on her hair.
Does Cantu add curls to straight hair?
No.
You can’t make straight hair curly with Cantu Cream as it doesn’t really add curls to straight hair. It only enhances curls that are already there.
So, if you have wavy hair or even slight curls towards the end of your hair, you can definitely give Cantu a try.
Does Cantu cause an itchy scalp?
I cannot speak for everyone else, but I do get a mildly itchy scalp if I apply it to the roots of my hair or my scalp.
Especially if I apply it to my scalp and then sweat afterward – my scalp does get itchy.
This is why you should always apply curly cream only to the lengths of your hair. I try to avoid the roots and leave at least 1-2 inches near the roots clean.
You don’t want to apply any product on your scalp unless you’re washing it 2 hours later.
Scalp buildup can clog pores and lead to more problems.
This is a heavy cream so you should only apply it to your curls and tips. Focus more on the tips because this tends to dry out a lot.
Cantu cream is great for strengthening and moisturizing the tips. It helps the hair tips stay moisturized and healthy for a long time.
It works even better if you lock it in with a light oil like Argan oil.
I don’t have to use any curl gel after using Cantu cream.
I use the emulsion method where I take a little in my palm and add some water to it before rubbing it and making it more liquidy before applying it to my hair – this helps my hair absorb the cream better and gets a better hold.
I hope this helps answer your question.
Cantu can be used in straight hair.
But if your hair is already healthy and moisturized, you should use a product that will give you more benefits because Cantu won’t help much.
