How to Wear a Beanie With an Afro (Avoid Flat Hair)

how to wear a beanie with an afro

I get it.

I have curly hair too and I hate wearing beanies, because you’re stuck with it the whole day.

Your hair gets flat and you now look like a flat-head.

It’s ridiculous.

I’ve been trying some strategies to avoid this so that I can wear my beanie and take it off whenever I want.

In this post, I want to give you some tips on how you can wear a beanie with your afro and avoid flat hair.

Let’s get to it!

1. Buy an over-sized beanie

buy an oversized beanie

We curly-haired people cannot wear tiny beanies.

It will squish our head and our curls, and this is what will result in flat-head!

I even made a comic about it a long time ago, showcasing how silly it is.

So, step one to not squishing your hair is to get a BIG beanie – something like this.

    buy oversized beanie here

Remember – you’re looking specifically for oversized beanies.

It technically isn’t oversized – it’s just large enough to sit on your curls without squishing them.

    2. Get a satin-lined beanie to reduce friction

If your hair is easily roughed up by the wool fibers, then this is an excellent option.

It is perfect for cold weather because it has an additional satin lining inside – which means your hair will not tug in the fibers, and the satin will reduce friction.

I have one of these and it’s amazing!

    3. Use bobby pins to secure the beanie in place

use bobby pins to secure the beanie in place

If you’re one of those people whose beanies keep slipping or moving, just get some bobby pins and secure the beanie in place – this is to ensure that the beanie stays put.

Do this only if you intend on keeping it on your head for a long time.

    4. Do not pull the beanie down too tightly

do not pull the beanie down too much

If you pull the beanie down, it’s going to squish your curls and make you look like you’re wearing a hair helmet – you know exactly what I’m talking about.

    So, don’t do that!

Instead, place the beanie on your head and avoid pulling it all the way down.

Also, make sure that there is some gap between your skull and the beanie – so that your hair can be a little loose underneath.

This is the optimum beanie placement!

    5. Place the beanie strategically

    place the beanie strategically

Move it further backward so that it’s covering the back of your head more.

Do not pull it down your forehead – otherwise, it’s going to squish the front part of your hair, and it will ruin your hairstyle.

So, added to the beanie being loose, make sure it covers the back of your hair.

    Got it?

    Good!

    6. Put the beanie upside down

Bend forwards and put the beanie on upside down – this will ensure that your hair is loose near the base of the skull and will avoid the flat-look.

Remember how we curly girls diffuse our hair?

Or how we put on our hair towel so that our hair is springy and gorgeous?

That’s the same method you must adopt when putting on a beanie.

Scrunch the hair as you’re putting your beanie on.

This will ensure that when you take off the beanie, your hair will fall nicely downwards and won’t be stuck to your scalp!

    7. Carry a hair pick with you at all times

carry a hair pick with you at all times

I’m sorry, but as curly people, we do need to carry extra equipment to look our best.

The hair pick will help you fluff up your curls and add some volume to your hair near your scalp.

If you follow all the previous tips I’ve mentioned, you don’t need to fluff up your hair that much!

Bonus: Experiment with different beanies and angles

    experiment with different beanies

    Everybody’s hair is different.

We have so many factors to consider, like hair type, hair pattern, or length.

So experiment with different beanies and see which ones are comfortable for you – once you find your perfect fit, stick to it!

    Conclusion

    This works – I promise!

I, too, wore my flat-head for a long time, and it was dreadful.

I remember being unable to take off my beanie indoors and coming up with innovative lies when people asked me if I was feeling hot.

Oh well, better late than never.

    I hope that helped!
